Have a guess at what service OnlineAuction might provide. Fly fishing advice? Car towing? Taxidermy? No, no, it’s a website which hosts online auctions of course! Okay, so in title at least this website does what it says on the tin and keeps things simple. But how useful is it in helping you to buy or sell items online?
Actually, it doesn’t do a bad job, with some handy buyer features and a very reasonable monthly rate. Whilst this might not be ideal if you wish to only sell one or two cheaper items, it’s a bargain if you wish to make regular sales or hope to cash in on an unwanted item which is worth a considerable amount of money.
At $8 a month OnlineAuction.com offers excellent value for money if you have plenty you wish to sell. There are no listing fees and no final value fees, so you can auction to your heart’s content and not worry about having to pay a percentage of the profits. There are a lot of categories to choose from, in which to place your advertisement (or set up your auction), including antiques, (items for) babies, collectables, computers, jewellery and more.
Buyers are able to search for the item they’re looking for using an advanced search engine, or they can simply browse. The site also has a number of “highlighted” items which let buyers find new auctions, auctions which are due to end or items which have been selected by staff. This means your auction is likely to be seen by more people as there are several ways for potential buyers to learn about any sales you have.
As a seller, you can set up a store to sell all of your items, encouraging browsers to click on a few more of your items. You can include a photo, as well as a larger picture of your item, plus item and shipping details. You can also choose from a range of possible payment options including PayPal and credit cards, offering a simple but effective sales system.
There are few other options though, such as setting up promotional deals (for example “buy x and get y for free”), and we would like more video and photo options to help you really show off what you have to sell. In fact the sales pages, whilst practical, are rather plain and look a little unprofessional sometimes.
If you have questions or wish to talk to other traders then you can communicate on the site’s forum. Otherwise, you can read blog posts or recent site news. Unfortunately, the site doesn’t offer great security on purchases and sales as there is no third party policy on resolving issues, so you’ll have to argue amongst yourselves if something goes missing in the post or a check bounces.
Whilst Online Auction is a functional auctioning website with a cheap option for regular sellers, it is somewhat bland and won’t offer great value in all circumstances. However, we still recommend checking it out as there’s plenty to like here.
